Discover Myeongseong Restaurant in Gwangju, a hidden local gem serving exquisite Dakbokkeumtang and comforting Cheonggukjang. Perfect for an authentic Korean family meal!
When you're looking for an authentic Korean dining experience, especially one perfect for a family gathering, Myeongseong Restaurant in Gwangju's Jisan-dong neighborhood is a top recommendation. Tucked away behind the Gwangju District Court, this hidden gem is beloved by locals.

What makes it truly special is its exclusivity: Myeongseong Restaurant operates for just over two hours during weekday lunch, and reservations are absolutely essential. This limited availability only adds to its mystique and popularity among Gwangju residents seeking a truly local flavor.

I recently brought my mother, who adores Cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste stew), for a delightful and impeccably prepared lunch. It was a fantastic experience we can't wait to share!

A Cozy, Welcoming Interior

As you can see from the photos, the restaurant features traditional Korean floor seating (좌식, jwajik), offering a truly authentic experience.

There are also private room-style areas. It's worth noting that even in these rooms, you might share a larger table with other parties, adding to the communal and friendly atmosphere.
The Menu: A Taste of Authentic Korea

The menu at Myeongseong Restaurant focuses on classic Korean dishes: Cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste stew), Jeyuk-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), and hearty chicken or duck dishes. Keep in mind that the chicken and duck specialties require a minimum of two hours' advance reservation due to their extensive preparation time. This ensures every dish is cooked to perfection.

As soon as you're seated, your table will be generously filled with a pristine array of Namdo-style banchan (side dishes). From aged kimchi (muk-eunji) to various seasoned vegetables (namul), savory braised beef (jangjorim), and unique mustard leaf kimchi (gat-kimchi), each dish boasts a subtle yet profound depth of flavor. These aren't overly spicy or intense; instead, they offer a delicate umami that speaks to the kitchen's expertise. The staff were incredibly friendly and happy to provide refills multiple times, ensuring we had plenty to enjoy.
Signature Dishes: Flavorful Dakbokkeumtang and Hearty Cheonggukjang

The Dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken stew), which absolutely requires a reservation, was a visual and culinary masterpiece. Its rich, glossy red sauce was incredibly inviting. Compared to other places, the sauce here felt much deeper and more robust, thoroughly infusing every piece of tender, succulent chicken. The generous chunks of potato were perfectly cooked, offering a delightful, fluffy texture that complemented the chicken beautifully.

While you can order the savory Cheonggukjang à la carte, it's a smart move to order it as a set with Dakbokkeumtang or Jeyuk-bokkeum, as a rich earthenware pot of Cheonggukjang is included as a complimentary side. The best part? It's refillable!

Unlike some versions that can be overpowering, Myeongseong's Cheonggukjang offered a deep, clean, and savory broth, perfectly balanced with the comforting earthiness of fermented soybeans and silky tofu. My mother, a true Cheonggukjang connoisseur, couldn't stop praising its deliciousness.

Mixing the sweet and spicy sauce with a bowl of warm rice is an absolute must – you'll find your rice bowl empty in no time! Be aware that the Dakbokkeumtang has a slight kick at the end, so it might be a bit spicy for younger palates.

To complete your meal, a comforting bowl of nurungji (scorched rice soup) is also served.

Overall, ordering a main dish here delivers exceptional value. You receive a high-quality Cheonggukjang and an abundance of delicious Namdo-style banchan. For those who appreciate rich, deep flavors, Myeongseong Restaurant comes highly recommended!
