If you're planning an independent trip and hopping between towns, a little foresight and planning will go a long way.
Often, travelers aim for Frigiliana, a picturesque white village. However, there's no direct public transport from Granada to Frigiliana; you'll need to pass through the charming coastal town of Nerja first.
Let me walk you through how to plan a perfect day trip from Granada to explore both Nerja and Frigiliana.
1. How to Reach Frigiliana from Granada?
As I mentioned, there's no direct public transportation to Frigiliana from Granada. Unless you're driving, you'll need to make a stop in Nerja.
Frigiliana, highlighted in red on the map, is a truly tiny village nestled right next to Nerja.
2. Getting from Granada to Nerja
First things first, let's get you to Nerja!
The best way to travel from Granada to Nerja is by bus. You can purchase tickets directly at the bus terminal or, for convenience, book in advance via the ALSA website or app – ALSA is Spain's primary bus company.
If you're planning a day trip, you'll likely want to depart in the morning. Here's a typical morning schedule for buses from Granada to Nerja:

The 7:00 AM bus makes 11 stops, which might seem like a lot, but for a day trip, it's often the most practical option to get an early start. Waking up that early for a bus can be a drag, but it's worth it!

2. From Nerja to Frigiliana
Once you arrive at the Nerja bus terminal, you can easily catch a connecting bus to Frigiliana from there.

The bus fare is a mere ~$1 one way. This route is operated by a local bus company, and there isn't a dedicated website for advance bookings. You can simply buy your ticket directly from the bus driver.
Nerja to Frigiliana Bus Schedule
From Monday to Saturday, buses run frequently, with 12 departures starting early in the morning.
On Sundays and public holidays, the first bus departs at 9:30 AM.
Note that the 9:30 PM bus only operates during the summer season (typically from July 1st to August 31st).
The journey from Nerja to Frigiliana is quite short, usually taking only 20-25 minutes.
Frigiliana doesn't have a proper bus terminal, just a simple bus stop. Make sure to remember where you get off, as that's where you'll need to return for your journey back!

3. Returning from Frigiliana

The last bus back to Granada departs at 7:00 PM. Frigiliana isn't a town that takes a long time to explore, and Nerja, while lovely, doesn't have a huge number of major sights either.
However, personally, I found Nerja incredibly captivating. It boasts a stunning coastline, and the town itself is quaint and charming, exuding that authentic Southern Spanish local vibe.
If I had more time, I would absolutely love to spend 1-2 nights in Nerja, simply strolling around, exploring the town, enjoying a glass of wine at an outdoor cafe, and soaking in the beautiful seaside atmosphere. It's a place where you can truly relax and unwind.
Therefore, when you visit Frigiliana, I recommend heading straight there first. Then, on your way back, take some time to explore Nerja.
Here's my recommended day trip itinerary!
Depart from Granada on the 7:00 AM bus.
From Nerja, immediately transfer to Frigiliana.
Arrive in Frigiliana just after 10:00 AM, then take the 12:45 PM bus back to Nerja.
It's much better to have lunch in Nerja, as Frigiliana has fewer dining options.
Catch the 5:00 PM bus back to Granada, and you'll be perfectly set! It's always good to avoid arriving back too late, just to be on the safe side.
While getting from Granada to Frigiliana as a day trip might seem a *tiny* bit inconvenient, it's certainly not difficult, right? Just make sure you get on and off the right buses!
