Gozo Island Private Tour Review 2026: Malta Itinerary
Discover why a Gozo Island private tour is the ultimate Malta day trip. We share our 2026 itinerary, costs, and tips for exploring this mythological gem.

Honest Review: Gozo Island Private Tour in Malta
When planning a trip to Malta,
most travelers hyper-focus on Valletta or the Blue Lagoon.
But if you want to experience the true, unfiltered soul of the country,
you simply cannot skip Gozo Island.
Legend has it that this is the mythological isle
where the nymph Calypso kept Odysseus captive for seven years.
It’s also home to the Ġgantija Temples,
ancient ruins that predate the Egyptian pyramids by over 1,000 years.
At first, I thought Gozo was just another
small neighboring island.
But after experiencing it firsthand, I can confidently say:
if you haven't spent at least a day exploring Gozo,
you haven't truly seen Malta.
Here is my complete breakdown of our Gozo Island adventure.

4. What to Pack
1. Booking the Tour

The biggest dilemma while planning our Malta itinerary was
figuring out how to tackle Gozo.
We debated renting a car to explore at our own pace,
but navigating unfamiliar roads, driving on the left,
and coordinating ferry schedules felt a bit overwhelming.
Ultimately, we decided to book a full-day private Gozo tour
with an expert local guide.

Spoiler alert:
this is the absolute best choice for first-time visitors!
It wasn't just about the convenience of seamless transportation.
Having a knowledgeable guide to unpack the history, geography,
and rich culture of Malta in a private setting
completely elevated the experience.
Because you get the guide and vehicle entirely to yourselves,
it's highly recommended for
honeymoons or family trips!
2. Why We Chose a Private Tour

Almost everyone traveling to Malta
asks the same questions.
Is one day enough for Gozo?
Should I just navigate the local transit myself?
What I loved most about this tour was
the perfect balance of comfort and depth.
Had we done a DIY trip, half our day would have evaporated
checking ferry timetables, haggling with taxis,
and hiking up steep cobblestone hills under the sun.
With the tour, every single logistical detail was handled.

There are some additional local expenses to keep in mind
(taxi/driver fees, ferry tickets, lunch, and the optional boat ride).
However, these were clearly outlined
when we booked online, so there were no surprise
tourist traps or price gouging on the ground.
(Booking tours locally on the spot
often leads to unexpected overcharges!)

Expected Local Costs (Converted to USD):
Private Driver/Taxi: ~$160 for 1-2 people (~$215 for 3-4 people),
Round-trip Ferry: ~$5 per person,
Lunch: ~$22, Optional Boat Tour: ~$4.50
Considering you get a private, customized,
all-day experience for your group,
the pricing is incredibly reasonable.
If you're traveling as a couple or with family,
the value is completely unbeatable!

Sure, a fully independent trip might save a few bucks,
but when you factor in travel fatigue and the sheer quality of the experience,
this tour was vastly more efficient.
The deep dive into Malta's history from our expert guide
was the ultimate differentiator.

3. Itinerary & Route

The day kicks off with a prompt 9:00 AM hotel pickup.
The scenic drive across the main island of Malta—passing by Popeye Village—
before hopping on the 15-minute ferry to Gozo
makes the transit feel like part of the adventure.

Upon arriving in Gozo, our first stop was the
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta' Pinu.
This isn't just a beautiful piece of architecture;
it's a profound pilgrimage site known for its miracles.
The atmosphere here is deeply moving.
Our guide shared incredible stories of the site's history
and the deep-rooted faith of the Maltese people,
helping us understand why this church is the beating heart of Gozo.

From there, the itinerary was a highlight reel of Gozo:
the geometric Xwejni Salt Pans, the stunning Dwejra Bay boat tour,
Calypso Cave, the red sands of Ramla Bay,
and the towering Victoria Citadel.
It felt like experiencing a microcosm of Malta in a single day!
The Dwejra boat tour is technically optional,
but almost everyone does it—and you absolutely should.
For lunch, our guide whisked us away to a charming local seafood spot.
No reservations needed, no stressing over the menu.
Lunch is paid separately, but the prices were great and the food was phenomenal.
4. What to Pack

1. Comfortable Walking Shoes.
Gozo is full of hills, ancient ruins, and cobblestone streets. Ditch the heels.
2. A Hat and a Scarf/Shawl.
The Mediterranean sun is strong! Also, a shawl is mandatory for entering the churches.

3. Travel Insurance.
Always highly recommended for peace of mind when traveling internationally.
4. Book Well in Advance.
Private tours have limited availability, especially for the 2026 season. Secure dates early!

If you are planning a trip to Malta,
I cannot stress this enough: a Gozo tour is not optional,
it is essential.
This island is more than just a tourist attraction;
it holds the spirit of the Maltese archipelago.
Getting to uncover hidden viewpoints and local lore
with an expert guide made this single day
the absolute highlight of our trip.
Gozo truly shows you a different face of Malta.
Riding the ferry back at sunset,
my only regret was that we didn't book an overnight stay
to soak it in just a little bit longer..!
