Today, I'm excited to share more details about my visit to the Gochang Green Barley Field, a stunning stop on my 3-day Jeollado road trip itinerary that also took me through Gangjin, Yeongam, Mokpo, and Sinan.
To be upfront, my timing for seeing the green barley fields at their peak wasn't ideal. So, instead of showcasing vibrant, picture-perfect barley fields, this post will focus on how different the scenery can be depending on when you visit.
In March 2026, Gochang was the final destination on my 3-day self-driving trip through Gangjin, Yeongam, Mokpo, and Sinan. After spending the night in Mokpo on day 2, I set off early on day 3 for Gochang. Since my ultimate destination for this trip was Iksan, Gochang was a convenient stop along the way.
Having my own car meant I wasn't bound by bus schedules, allowing for a relaxed and flexible visit. The ability to adjust my time in each region on the fly was a big reason why this road trip was so enjoyable.
The most famous spot for Gochang's green barley fields is Hakwon Farm, located at 150 Hakwon농장길, Gongeum-myeon, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province.

It's incredibly convenient to visit by car, thanks to the large, free parking lot. The sheer scale of the green fields that greet you upon arrival is truly impressive.
The farm's location makes public transportation a bit tricky, so I highly recommend traveling by car, just like I did.
As you wander along the winding dirt paths through the fields, you'll spot a windmill-shaped observation deck in the distance. Up close, it's a circular wooden structure topped with white windmill blades. Standing tall in the middle of the vast fields, it served as a helpful landmark throughout my walk.
Here's where I need to be honest. When I visited in March, the barley was still in its sprouting stage. This meant it wasn't the lush, vibrant green barley field you often see in photographs.
The entire field was covered with delicate young sprouts just beginning to emerge. While it had its own charm, signaling the start of spring, it definitely wasn't the "green barley field" experience I had envisioned. I wish I had researched the timing a bit more beforehand, and I hope this post helps you avoid the same mistake!

During the festival, you can enjoy treasure hunts, busking performances, and food stalls featuring barley-based treats. So, rather than visiting in the early spring like I did in March, I highly recommend planning your trip to coincide with the festival period.
Even during my March visit, spring flowers like plum blossoms were already blooming around the farm. Imagining the additional splash of yellow from canola flowers during the peak season makes me think it would be an even more spectacular and colorful sight.
After exploring the green barley fields, I grabbed lunch near Gochang City Hall before heading to the final destination of this trip, the National Iksan Museum.
The drive from Gochang to Iksan was quite manageable, making this itinerary perfect for dividing a 3-day trip across several regions. Starting in Gangjin, moving through Mokpo and Sinan, and concluding in Gochang and Iksan, it felt like I was sweeping through the southwestern part of Jeollado from south to north.
The green barley field, as its name suggests, truly shines when the barley is mature and green, making the timing of your visit especially crucial. If you go in early spring, like I did in March, you might only see young sprouts. For the authentic vibrant green barley field experience, I highly recommend scheduling your trip to align with the late April to early May festival period.
