Gero Onsen Suimeikan
A Big Family Stay for 6!
From Japanese-style Suites to Three Grand Baths & Kaiseki Cuisine
ⓒ Text & Photos by Ttakku-gi 2026
Hello everyone! I'm Ttakku-gi. 😊
This time, I visited Suimeikan (水明館),
a premier ryokan in Gero Onsen, renowned as one of Japan's top three famous hot springs!

Our big family of six adults visited and
stayed in a spacious and comfortable Japanese-style suite.
We indulged in a full course of exquisite Kaiseki dinner and breakfast,
and spent unforgettable, healing moments in the three grand public baths
located in each building.
If you're planning a trip with your parents or
a large group of 6 or more, I wholeheartedly recommend it!
1. Location & Accessibility
📍 Suimeikan
1268 Koden, Gero, Gifu 509-2206, Japan
📍 Suimeikan

Approximately a 3-minute walk from Gero Station
You'll arrive in just 3 minutes on foot
right after exiting Gero Station
We went by rental car, and
there was a dedicated parking lot right in front,
making it super convenient to unload our luggage.

Moreover, situated right by the Hida River,
you can fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking open scenery and
the charming onsen town atmosphere.
It truly felt like the most centrally located
onsen accommodation in Gero Village.
✅Things to Do
Take an evening stroll in a yukata
Gero Village is surrounded by onsen accommodations,
so in the evening,
it was fun to see everyone walking around
in yukata from their inns.

In the morning, though, it seemed we were the only ones!
Still, taking a walk through Gero in a yukata!
I really wanted to experience that.
2. Lobby & Check-in

As expected from a historic, large-scale ryokan,
the lobby was also incredibly spacious.
It felt grand, yet
exuded a refined sense of traditional Japanese beauty.
Right in front of the lobby, there's a pond,
making it quite enjoyable to watch the koi fish! Haha

✔️ Check-in Tip
The staff kindly
guided us in English.
While their "Japan-glish" made it a little tricky to understand at times,
they patiently and kindly assisted us with
room and meal time instructions.

3. Room Review (Japanese-style Suite)

The Japanese-style suite we stayed in was
about 83m²,
boasting a pretty spacious size!
Bedroom
There was a bedroom with a double bed,
and four people used futon bedding in the living room.

The view from the bedroom is also absolutely lovely.

Even with six people spreading out their luggage, there was plenty of space, so it didn't feel cramped at all.
Bedding
In the traditional tatami room style,
after finishing dinner and returning from the hot spring,
a cozy futon set
is neatly laid out for you.

The floor is thick, so even with futon bedding,
you'll fall asleep instantly after lying down post-hot spring,
allowing for a deep sleep...
Bathroom

There was a private bathroom,
but after washing up at the main communal bath,
we didn't end up using the smaller bath at all.
If you prefer privacy,
you can also enjoy a tranquil hot spring experience in the wooden bath.

There was only one toilet,
so I thought it might be a bit inconvenient for the whole family to use.
However, there was a communal toilet right outside the room that was rarely used,
so using the restroom wasn't inconvenient at all.
Balcony
With a balcony offering scenic views,
it was wonderful to enjoy the open scenery right from the room.

It was truly spacious and fantastic.
4. Facilities (Communal Baths & Meals)
The highlight of Suimeikan
is undoubtedly its 'three hot spring communal baths'!

Each annex of the building has its own unique communal bath,
allowing you to enjoy a hot spring tour right within the ryokan!
♨️ Tip: Comparing the 3 Hot Springs
Communal Baths by Building
You can use all three baths, from the one with an outdoor rotenburo (open-air bath)
to the communal bath with spectacular views.
✅ Shimodonoyu

You could only use the Hinoki Suimeikan Onsen if you stayed in the Suimeikan wing,
and the Suimeikan Onsen (Shimodonoyu) had the newest facilities,
so it was clean, luxurious, and excellent.
Shimodonoyu was the place I wanted to visit more than once.
✅ Outdoor Rotenburo

With its outdoor open-air bath, it's definitely worth a visit! Haha.
✅Panoramic Grand Bath

The bath located on the 9th floor offers the unique charm of enjoying the hot spring while overlooking the Hida River.
It seemed to be the oldest, and I found the facilities a bit disappointing.
It felt more like a public bath than a luxurious hot spring experience.
Recommended Hot Spring
I personally tried all three hot springs, and I found that the hot spring located in the Suimeikan building where we stayed had the most modern and luxurious facilities, and the water quality and atmosphere were truly the best!

The water was so incredibly smooth, it made my skin feel truly soft and supple.
✅Tip for Avoiding Crowds
Rather than right after dinner,
if you visit right after check-in or
early in the morning,
you can enjoy the hot springs much more leisurely.
🍱 Dinner & Breakfast Review
From the moment we made our reservation,
we opted for the in-room dining option,
so we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast in our room.
In conclusion, it was incredibly satisfying!

If you let them know your meal times in advance,
they will prepare everything for you.
For dinner, we were served Hida beef.
The price of Hida beef can be quite substantial even when dining out,
so it was truly wonderful to enjoy it comfortably at the ryokan.
Since this post is getting a bit long, I'll continue with a detailed review of the Kaiseki meal in the next article : )

Gym, Pool & Various Amenities
There was also a swimming pool and a gym available for a fee.

5. Price Comparison & Booking Tips
For our family of 6, we stayed one night in a suite that included breakfast and dinner Kaiseki course meals for ~$888!
This worked out to about ~$148 per person.
Considering the exquisite Kaiseki cuisine we could comfortably enjoy in our room,
the accommodation for 6 people, and the grand baths of a luxury ryokan,
both the value for money and overall satisfaction were outstanding.
There are several options available, such as whether only breakfast is included or if dinner is also included, so I recommend checking them thoroughly before making your payment.
Booking Platform | Room Type | Estimated Price per Night | Features |
Agoda | Japanese-style Suite (6 people) Breakfast Included | ~$526~ | |
Booking.com | Japanese-style Suite (6 people) Breakfast Included | ~$607~ |
💡 Booking Pro Tip

Popular rooms like the 6-person suite are limited in number and often get booked up quickly.
I highly recommend securing your reservation with a free cancellation option as soon as your travel dates are set!
6. Local Sightseeing Tips

After check-out,
I recommend heading out to Gero Onsen Street to try the Onsen Egg Ice Cream,
and then relaxing at a foot bath cafe to truly soak in the tranquil atmosphere!
Gero Onsen Suimeikan
If you're planning a hot spring trip to Japan,
you absolutely must visit! 😊
In my next post,
I'll be back with a detailed review of the Kaiseki meal.
