Thoughtfully Curated and Refined Menu
As a prestigious Namdo Hanjeongsik establishment, Gajok Hoegwan's menu features robust courses, from the Ochan (Lunch) Set to the Gajok (Family) Set and the Shinseon (Premium) Set.
Let's take a closer look at the menu options:
1. Ochan Jeongshik (Lunch Set) (~$21 per person)
This is a popular, value-packed course that allows you to savor the flavors of Namdo cuisine in a light yet satisfying way. It begins with a welcome dish, followed by a seasonal salad, today's porridge, flounder sashimi, sea squirt sashimi, Hanwoo beef tartare, Jeollado-style skate muchim (spicy seasoned skate), vegetable pancake, spicy charcoal-grilled pork, royal japchae, grilled dried yellow croaker, a full meal, and dessert.
The weekday lunch special offers even greater value at ~$17 per person.
2. Gajok Jeongshik (Family Set) (Based on 4 people / ~$41 per person)
This course is highly popular for family gatherings and formal occasions. It features an abundance of exquisite Namdo dishes, including herbal galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), Heuksan-do skate samhap (skate, pork belly, kimchi combination), pan-fried beef jeon, Wando abalone butter-grilled, and large shrimp tempura.
3. Shinseon Jeongshik (Premium Set) (Based on 4 people / ~$69 per person)
This is a luxurious Hanjeongsik course featuring top-tier ingredients, including royal sinseollo (hot pot), fried rockfish with sweet and sour sauce, Hanwoo beef and abalone steak, and live octopus tangtangi.
Deep Flavors and Exquisite Taste
I ordered the value-for-money lunch special.
A table full of dishes was set before me. I didn't even know where to begin!
The perfectly golden-brown jeon (pancake) had a delightful crispy texture. With each dish that arrived,
the side dishes, made with seasonal wild vegetables and healthy ingredients, all tasted incredibly clean and profound, without any artificial flavors. The authentic taste of Namdo cuisine truly shone through in the basic side dishes like kimchi, namul, and salad.
When you cut a piece of the perfectly dried, chewy, and savory boribgulbi (dried yellow croaker) and place it on rice soaked in cool iced green tea, your mouth explodes with umami flavor.
The Jeyuk Gochujang Sutbul-gui (spicy charcoal-grilled pork) had a subtle charcoal aroma that tantalized the nose, and the sweet and spicy marinade was so deeply infused that it was a true 'rice thief' – meaning it made you want to eat more and more rice.
After the meal, the refreshing and sweet maesilcha (plum tea) provided a perfect, clean finish to the palate.
Great Value & Friendly Service
True to its 37-year legacy as a traditional Dongmyeong-dong Hanjeongsik restaurant, the staff's service and demeanor were incredibly warm and friendly. They thoughtfully explained each dish and even meticulously deboned the dried yellow croaker for us, making us feel truly pampered. It was an experience of being well taken care of.
After your meal, we highly recommend exploring the nearby Dongmyeong-dong Cafe Street or the National Asia Culture Center (ACC). The itinerary of enjoying a tranquil Hanjeongsik, then unwinding with a cup of tea at a charming Dongmyeong-dong dessert cafe and taking a stroll, is absolutely perfect for parents or a romantic date.
