Fukuoka is a fantastic city for shopping, but it's also a prime launchpad for amazing day trips to nearby cities.
One of our favorite spots for a quick escape is Kitakyushu, easily accessible by Shinkansen from Hakata Station in just 15-20 minutes. It's so convenient, you won't even need a guided tour!
In this guide, I'll share my experience exploring Kokura, Moji Port, and Shimonoseki on a day trip, plus a detailed comparison of Shinkansen ticket prices between Hakata and Kokura.
1. Kokura, Moji Port, and Shimonoseki Day Trip Review
My Kitakyushu adventure kicked off at Kokura Station. While a regular JR train from Hakata to Kokura takes about an hour, hopping on the Sanyo Shinkansen gets you there in a speedy 15-20 minutes.
From Kokura Station, the heart of Kitakyushu, you can reach Moji Port by local train in about 15 minutes.
Moji Port is a charming area that perfectly preserves its past as a bustling port city, offering a delightful retro atmosphere.
When in Moji Port, you absolutely have to try Yakikare (baked curry). I visited Princess Pipi, which seemed to be the most popular spot among the many options.
While it wasn't a dish I'd necessarily rush back for, it's a signature Moji Port food, so it's definitely worth trying at least once. - Please note, taste is subjective! -
Moji Port is a picturesque town where you can enjoy both adorable retro architecture and stunning harbor views. If you stick to the main tourist spots around the harbor, 2-3 hours is plenty of time to explore.
If you have more time after Moji Port, consider adding the Sarakurayama Observatory to your itinerary. It's one of Kitakyushu's premier night view spots, recognized as one of Japan's New Three Great Night Views, making it a fantastic addition to your visit.
Although I'm writing about Moji Port first, I actually visited Shimonoseki before Moji Port during my trip. The reason? Karato Market! This incredible sushi market is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and you need to go in the morning for the best selection, as most stalls close by early afternoon.
From Moji Port, a ferry ride to Shimonoseki takes about 15 minutes.
The fare is 400 yen.
Combining Hakata, Kokura, Moji Port, and Shimonoseki into a single day trip is totally doable; the travel flow works out perfectly.
2. Sanyo Shinkansen Advance Purchase vs. On-Site Prices
Based on current prices in 2026, here's a comparison between purchasing tickets on-site and booking in advance:

Even with the current favorable exchange rate for the Japanese Yen, purchasing your Shinkansen tickets in advance can save you approximately ~$4 for a one-way trip compared to buying on-site.
For a round trip, that's a saving of about ~$8 per person! If you're planning a visit to Kitakyushu, the advance purchase option clearly offers better value.
I was a bit worried about getting a seat since it's non-reserved, but there were plenty of seats available.

3. Redeeming Your Pass at Hakata Station
If you've purchased a non-reserved Sanyo Shinkansen ticket in advance, you'll need to exchange your voucher for a physical ticket before boarding.
At Hakata Station, simply look for the Shinkansen ticket gates, which are conveniently located near the Chikushi East Exit.
Follow the pink line on the floor (as shown in the picture on the left) and it will lead you directly to the ticket machines where you can exchange your voucher.
Just follow the on-screen instructions, and you'll easily exchange your voucher for a physical ticket. There are also staff members nearby if you need any assistance, so the process is straightforward.
Remember to bring your passport when redeeming your tickets! It's absolutely essential.
Visiting Kokura, Moji Port, and Shimonoseki as a day trip is perfectly manageable, and the travel route is efficient. Plus, by simply booking your Shinkansen tickets in advance, you can save around ~$8 on a round trip. So, if you're planning a trip to Kitakyushu, keep these tips in mind for a budget-friendly adventure! 👍

You can exchange your pre-purchased Shinkansen ticket at a ticket machine near the Shinkansen ticket gates, close to the Chikushi East Exit at Hakata Station. You must bring your passport when exchanging for a physical ticket.
