When planning a trip with a 4-year-old,
there's really only one question that pops into your head first:
"Will my child actually enjoy Fukuoka?"
No matter how amazing a destination is to an adult,
if it's not fun from a child's perspective,
a family trip can quickly become exhausting. I had so many worries about this, but...
In that sense, Fukuoka turned out to be
a destination where family-friendly spots
are packed together much better than I expected.
With short flight times and easy transit, Fukuoka is perfect.
Today, out of all the places we visited during our trip with our 4-year-old,
I've handpicked the absolute favorites that my child truly loved
and put together this BEST 3 guide!
1. Marine World Uminonakamichi
If you search for family-friendly places in Fukuoka,
one spot that always tops the list is
Marine World Uminonakamichi.
As Kyushu's largest aquarium,
not only can you get up close
with colorful marine life,
but they also host the super popular dolphin show
multiple times a day—always a huge hit with the kids!
When I brought my little one,
the moment the dolphins leaped high out of the water,
their eyes went completely wide. Watching that adorable,
wonder-filled expression made me feel
so incredibly proud of planning this trip.

Getting to Marine World is quite easy—
you can easily reach it from downtown Fukuoka
using the JR Line and the seaside Uminonakamichi Line.
There is also a massive seaside park surrounding the aquarium,
which means even after the shows end,
there's plenty of open space for kids to run around and burn energy.
A huge plus for families traveling with little ones! 💛
While you can purchase tickets on-site,
lines can get quite long during peak season.
So, I highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance.

2. Beppu Kamado Jigoku (Hell Hot Springs)
Among the destinations near Fukuoka,
the one place I highly recommend visiting with kids is
Beppu Kamado Jigoku (Hell Hot Springs).
You can witness bubbling hot spring water
surging directly from the ground
right before your eyes. It's fascinating for adults,
so you can only imagine
how absolutely magical it looks to a child.
Another detail that kids find absolutely mind-blowing is that
the color of the hot spring water is different in each zone.
Looking back and forth between the bubbling blue and red pools,
I still remember my kid asking over and over, "Why is this one this color?"
My little one is especially obsessed with dinosaurs right now,
so I was able to connect the experience by explaining,
"This is exactly what the bubbling lava was like when we talked about volcanoes
and how the dinosaurs became extinct!" It turned into a great little learning moment.
I absolutely loved that part.
3. African Safari
If I had to choose just one single place
my child loved the most during our entire Fukuoka trip,
it would hands-down be the African Safari.
Honestly, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say
that we chose Fukuoka as our travel destination just to visit this place.
African Safari is Kyushu's only
drive-through safari park,
where you can drive along and come face-to-face with animals
like lions, giraffes, and elephants right in front of your eyes.
While other safari parks also let you view animals from a vehicle,
this experience is completely different because you can linger for as long as you want,
and I loved being able to sit and have deep conversations with my child right there.
The moment the animals passed right outside our window,
my little one pressed their face flat against the glass
and shouted, "Mom, look over there!!!!"
That precious moment is something no video could ever replace.
It has a level of vivid realism that is completely different
from seeing caged animals at a regular zoo.
If you're planning a trip to Fukuoka with kids,
I highly recommend putting African Safari at the very top of your itinerary.

However, there is one small catch.
African Safari
is located in an area that is quite tricky to reach via public transportation,
so it's practically impossible to visit without a rental car.
But, as you might know,
Japan drives on the left, and the steering wheel is on the opposite side.
While it might be fine on quiet, empty roads like in Okinawa,
Fukuoka involves navigating busy city traffic,
and driving a rental car when you aren't used to it
actually leads to quite a few accidents.
That's why I highly recommend
checking out a day tour to the outskirts of Fukuoka..!

As I was researching, I found a tour that covers African Safari,
Beppu's Kamado Jigoku (Hell Hot Springs), and Yufuin.
There was a day tour from Fukuoka
that lets you visit all three of these amazing places in a single day!
Since you travel with a guide,
you can comfortably listen to fascinating stories about each spot without any language barrier,
and being able to travel all the way to African Safari in absolute comfort
without needing a rental car
was the absolute best part of this tour!
With a child with me, instead of worrying about
driving on the opposite side of the road in an unfamiliar country,
we could just sit back, relax,
and enjoy the sightseeing. It was incredibly convenient!
Beyond African Safari,
the tour also lets you spend some peaceful, leisurely time in the charming town of Yufuin,
sampling delicious local snacks
and ice cream.
Instead of planning trips to Beppu Kamado Jigoku, African Safari, and Yufuin individually,
bundling them into a single day tour was far more efficient
both in terms of time and energy.
