If I had to pick one must-visit spot during a trip through Hungary's charming smaller cities, it would undeniably be Eger.
Beyond its grand history, the panoramic views of red-tiled roofs from atop the castle walls are truly captivating.
Today, I'm going to give you a comprehensive guide to Eger Castle, the absolute highlight of any Eger trip!
If you're planning a visit to Eger Castle, make sure to check out these tips before you go!

Once you enter the castle grounds, you'll find the ticket office right away.

Inside, you'll find the booths to purchase your admission tickets, along with restrooms. While it's a good idea to use the facilities before heading up, I was pleasantly surprised to find quite a few restrooms inside the castle, so it wasn't an issue at all.

After purchasing, it's time to enter! The weather was absolutely gorgeous – so much so that I felt like I was getting a tan, but the photos turned out beautifully.
Even the admission ticket itself is quite pretty!

Eger Castle
Eger Castle stands as a symbolic fortress where a small garrison of soldiers and local residents bravely defended the city against the vast Ottoman army in 1552. Inside the castle, you'll find museums dedicated to its history, weapon exhibitions, and underground fortress tunnels. The main highlight is undoubtedly the breathtaking panoramic view of Eger's red-tiled old town rooftops from the castle walls.
As you continue to ascend, you'll reach the perfect spot to take in that stunning red-roofed panorama.
I completely forgot about the heat for a moment and just snapped away!

It was definitely worth the journey for these views!
I initially wondered if there would be enough to see, and if the admission price was justified, but the castle grounds were much larger than expected. With various exhibition halls and attractions throughout, I ended up spending about 2 hours exploring.
Here are some more photos I took while exploring the castle.

Essential Visitor Tips
1. Visit Early in Summer
It gets hot, really hot, and there's not much shade. While Europe often offers cool relief in the shade, Eger Castle's open grounds mean direct sun exposure. I highly recommend visiting in the cooler morning hours.
2. Wear Comfortable Shoes
The paths are made of stone – not neatly tiled, but uneven stones of various shapes and sizes. Ditch the fancy footwear and opt for low-heeled, comfortable sneakers or walking shoes. Your feet will thank you!
3. Parking Advice
Instead of driving right up to the castle entrance, it's much more convenient to park your car in a public parking lot on the outskirts of the Old Town or near the Cathedral. From there, you can enjoy a pleasant walk through the charming Old Town streets up to the castle.

When visiting Eger Castle, it is more convenient to park in the public parking lots on the outskirts of the old town or near the cathedral, rather than directly in front of the castle, and then walk up through the old town streets.
