02. Dunhuang Hotel Recommendation on the Silk Road
My recent Silk Road adventure led me to Dunhuang, a truly captivating but somewhat off-the-beaten-path destination in the heart of China.
Information can be a bit sparse for this incredible city, but I'm here to share a fantastic find:
the Xingzi Hotel, conveniently located right near the vibrant Shazhou Night Market in Dunhuang, China!
The ground floor featured a welcoming lobby area, complete with a cozy space where you could grab a quick coffee or tea.
For less than ~$21 a night, this hotel offers incredible value and a great location. But what truly blew me away was their early check-in policy!
I arrived in Dunhuang by morning train, reaching the Xingzi Hotel around 7:30 AM.

I hesitantly asked about an early check-in, and to my delight, they checked me in immediately at 7:30 AM!
The price was truly unbeatable; I managed to book my stay for just ~$19 per night.
Plus, Trip.com often has fantastic China-specific hotel discounts, which helped me save even more.
I was assigned room 308, which featured two large, comfortable beds and felt incredibly clean!
The bedding was in great condition, and the room itself was surprisingly spacious, making it easy to spread out my luggage and backpack.
Unlike many budget hotels in China that can be small and windowless, the Xingzi Hotel offered a large window and plenty of room to relax.
The outlets were compatible with standard chargers, so I didn't need any special adapters. There was an outlet on each side of the bed,
which is super convenient whether you're traveling with friends, family, or like me, enjoying the luxury of having all the outlets to yourself!
I had the outlets all to myself!
A kettle and teacups were provided, and while I didn't use them, tea bags were also available.
Though not pictured, I found a hairdryer neatly tucked away in the drawer beneath the kettle!
The bathroom featured a separate shower area, which is always a plus.
The sink and toilet area were spotless, and the water pressure was excellent. As someone who absolutely needs a hot shower, I was thrilled to find that the hot water flowed generously and consistently!
Basic amenities like toothbrushes were provided as disposable items, while shampoo, body wash, and conditioner were in larger, refillable dispensers – a nice touch for sustainability!
The entrance area with the shoe rack was quite spacious, perfect for shaking off sand after a trip to Mingsha Mountain or drying an umbrella on a rainy day!
Though I don't have a photo, the closet was also generously sized – a definite bonus!
When exploring the Silk Road, entrance fees for attractions can add up quickly, so I was keen to save a bit on accommodation.
Honestly, with limited information about hotels in Dunhuang, I didn't have high expectations, but the Xingzi Hotel pleasantly surprised me from the moment I arrived.

Its prime location meant easy access to the vibrant night market and plenty of local eateries serving unique Dunhuang specialties, like delicious donkey meat dishes!
While Mingsha Mountain is about a 30-minute walk away, I mostly opted for taxis to get there, which were readily available.
If you're looking for an affordable hotel with a fantastic location near the night market in Dunhuang, China, I wholeheartedly recommend the Dunhuang Xingzi Hotel!
It's especially perfect for travelers who value the convenience of early check-in.
