This isn't just a place to shop; it's where you truly witness the daily life of Dalian residents, making it a must-visit during your trip.

While Gaode Maps indicates these hours, it seems the market typically winds down and closes around 6:00 PM.

I arrived around 9:30 AM, and the market was already buzzing with activity.

If you want to explore at a relaxed pace, I highly recommend visiting in the morning, or at the latest, in the early afternoon!

My Taoyuan Market Experience

I was genuinely surprised by the sheer size of Taoyuan Market! You'll find vendors spilling out onto the streets with their stalls, offering everything from fresh seafood, meats, fruits, and vegetables to grains, nuts, and a myriad of local treats.

Honestly, you could spend hours just exploring it all!

As Dalian is renowned for its seafood, it's no surprise that the market was brimming with an incredible variety – clams, conch, crabs, and so much more.

Just look at those prawns! They were practically jumping out of their tubs, a true testament to their freshness.

Sea urchins, in particular, seemed to be everywhere. While I'm not personally a huge fan, if you love seafood, you'll be thrilled to know you can enjoy freshly prepared sea urchin right on the spot! It's definitely an experience for adventurous eaters.

You'll also find a fantastic selection of fresh fruits like mangoes, mangosteens, apricots, cherries, and blueberries.

And of course, plenty of vegetables such as radishes, peppers, carrots, and cucumbers.

The meat section was a different experience from what you might find in Western supermarkets. Instead of pre-packaged cuts, you see freshly prepared meats openly displayed for sale.

From pork and lamb to some more... intriguing cuts, it's an authentic glimpse into local culinary traditions.

I also visited a specialty grain shop in Taoyuan Market, which I heard is quite popular, especially among Korean visitors.

With a Korean sign visible from a distance, it was easy to spot! They offered a wide array of grains and nuts, including rice, sesame seeds, perilla seeds, and peanuts.

The Korean signs and descriptions made browsing and purchasing feel very comfortable and welcoming.

A handy tip for shoppers: for just an additional ~$0 (3 Chinese Yuan), you can get your purchases vacuum-sealed, perfect for keeping them fresh on your journey home!

I particularly love the sunflower seeds sold at markets like this – they have a pure, nutty flavor without any overwhelming spices. They were available in different sizes and roast levels, and the best part was being able to sample them before buying!
