Discover how easy and affordable it is to use the Dalian subway for your 2026 trip. From buying tickets to riding the lines, get all the essential tips!

While ride-sharing apps like Didi are popular in China due to their affordability, I opted for the Dalian subway during my solo adventure. Public transport can be a fantastic way to experience a city like a local!
Ready to navigate Dalian like a pro? I'll walk you through everything, from purchasing your tickets to understanding the routes and my personal experience using the Dalian Metro.
How to Purchase Dalian Subway Tickets

The Dalian Metro system operates several lines, including Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, and 13. For most tourists, especially those looking to visit popular spots like Zhongshan Square, Xi'an Road, and Donggang, Line 2 is your go-to!
Don't worry about language barriers – the ticket vending machines support English. Just switch the language to English, and you'll find it much easier to navigate.

First, identify which line your destination is on. Then, on the screen, click on the corresponding line, select your destination station, and finally, on the right side, choose the number of passengers before hitting NEXT.

After confirming your destination and the fare, simply press "Confirm."

A payment QR code will then appear. You can easily complete your purchase using Alipay or WeChat Pay. Make sure you have one of these apps set up before your trip for seamless transactions!

Once your payment is processed, a single-use ticket will be issued. Just tap this ticket at the turnstile, and you're ready to head to the platform and catch your train!
My Dalian Subway Experience
During my trip, I traveled from Dalian Airport to Wuxiao Square using the subway. The fare was incredibly budget-friendly at 4 Chinese Yuan, which is roughly ~$1 USD.
It's amazing to think you can get from the airport to the city center for less than a dollar! This really highlights how affordable public transportation is in China, making it perfect for budget-conscious travelers.

The stations themselves felt familiar, similar to many modern subway systems I've encountered. While the train interiors were a bit cozier than some, they were cool, clean, and comfortable, which was a huge plus.
Since my accommodation was only a three-minute walk from Wuxiao Square Station, I relied on the subway extensively for getting around. It was not only a fantastic way to save on transportation costs but also incredibly convenient!
