If you're visiting Dalian, one dish you absolutely must try is sea urchin dumplings!
While Xiding is often cited for its sea urchin dumplings, I recently discovered Luwangzai, a bustling spot renowned for its incredible value.
I'm excited to share all the details: how to find Luwangzai, a peek at their menu, a link to Gaode Maps, and my personal solo dining experience.

Luwangzai Menu Highlights

They thoughtfully provide an English menu with pictures, making ordering a breeze.
Many diners opt for the Sea Urchin Xiaolongbao (6 pieces, 42 Yuan) and the Scallion Oil Noodles (10 Yuan).
Inside Luwangzai: Ambiance and Seating

The restaurant features a mix of four-person tables and smaller spots perfect for solo diners.

There's additional seating further inside. I visited around 10 AM, an off-peak time, so there was no waiting line. However, seeing a steady stream of locals and delivery drivers coming and going definitely heightened my anticipation – this felt like a truly authentic local spot!
Shortly after I arrived, the tables quickly filled up!

My Luwangzai Sea Urchin Dumpling Experience
While I wanted to try many of their signature dishes, as a solo traveler, I opted for the Assorted Xiaolongbao (3 pieces each of pork, shrimp, sea urchin, and crab roe / 58 Yuan).

A generous platter of 12 xiaolongbao arrived – truly a substantial meal!
The owner was incredibly kind, explaining each type of xiaolongbao and even demonstrating the best way to enjoy them.

As I carefully picked up a xiaolongbao with my chopsticks, a burst of savory broth gushed out, pooling on the plate!
The piping hot broth and rich aroma from the freshly steamed dumplings filled my mouth – it was absolutely delicious! Just be careful, they're served incredibly hot!
Each xiaolongbao had its own distinct flavor profile.
Personally, I'm not usually a huge fan of sea urchin due to its sometimes strong, briny flavor. But Luwangzai's sea urchin xiaolongbao were fantastic – not at all fishy, just wonderfully rich and savory. It made perfect sense why these dumplings are so famous here! Though I admit, after two, they can get a little rich.
I'd definitely go back for more on my next Dalian adventure!
If you're seeking an authentic, value-for-money xiaolongbao experience in Dalian, especially near Zhongshan Square, Luwangzai comes highly recommended! 💕
