Just landed at Mactan-Cebu International Airport? This guide covers your first steps: local SIM, currency exchange, and booking a Grab taxi for a seamless start to your Cebu adventure.
Upon landing at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), your first priorities typically revolve around three key things: sorting out your currency, getting connected with a local SIM, and arranging your airport transfer. While you could pre-book a hotel pickup, I usually prefer to handle these essentials upon arrival for maximum flexibility.
Cebu Currency Exchange
Cebu SIM Card
Cebu Grab Taxi

When you arrive at MCIA, look for currency exchange counters before you exit the arrivals hall. If you need some local pesos for your SIM card or immediate transportation to your hotel, exchanging a small amount here is a good idea. Just remember, airport exchange rates are usually not the best, so keep it to essentials!

Inside the airport, you might find rates around 54 Philippine Pesos (PHP) to 1 US Dollar. If you venture outside the airport, you can typically find better rates, closer to 58 PHP per dollar.

Personally, I often carry over leftover local currency from previous trips, so I rarely need to exchange money right at the airport.

Once you exit the main arrivals area, it might seem a bit sparse, but don't panic! Head to your left, and you'll find the kiosks selling Cebu SIM cards.

You'll find two main providers: Smart and Globe. Their prices are usually comparable. Travelers often have their preferences, but there isn't a definitive "better" option; it really comes down to personal choice. For instance, on a previous trip to Boracay, I used Globe, so this time around, I decided to try Smart.

Honestly, unless you're using both simultaneously for a direct comparison, and factoring in regional variations, it's hard to say. Generally, internet speeds across the Philippines can be a bit slow, and coverage can be spotty in some areas.

Interestingly, whether you choose a 3-day, 5-day, or 7-day data plan, the price often remains the same. It seems the standard offering is a week-long plan, and they likely offer shorter durations for travelers who feel a 7-day plan for a 3-day trip is a bit overkill!

One concern I had was that I was arriving on a Sunday evening and departing the following Sunday evening. For a 7-day plan, it was crucial to know if it meant a full 7 calendar days from activation or just 7 days counted. If it was a full 7 days, activating it immediately would work perfectly. But if it was just 7 calendar days, it would be smarter to use the airport Wi-Fi (since I arrived around 11:00 PM) and activate the SIM the next day. After all, my only plan for arrival night was to call a Grab and head to the hotel. I asked, and they confirmed it was a full 7 days from activation. While I wasn't entirely convinced at the time, I ended up using my Cebu SIM card right up until my departure, and it worked flawlessly!

If you prefer buying a physical SIM at the airport, follow these steps. Alternatively, if you want to be prepared ahead of time, you can purchase an eSIM online:

>> Philippines Unlimited Data eSIM - KKDAY
In Southeast Asia, Grab has become the go-to ride-hailing app, and for good reason. It's incredibly convenient and virtually eliminates the risk of being overcharged.
Right in front of the SIM card kiosks, you'll likely encounter taxi drivers actively soliciting rides. For the same destination, a solicited taxi might quote you around 675 PHP, a Grab Car would be about 434 PHP (fixed price), and a Grab Taxi would range from 320-384 PHP.

I opted for the more budget-friendly GrabTaxi. With this option, the driver uses a meter, and the fare typically falls within the quoted range. It usually does, as long as the driver doesn't try any tricks. While there's a slight need to keep an eye on the meter, Grab drivers are registered, which generally offers a sense of security. In my case, I only monitored it initially, and the fare ended up right in the middle of the estimated range.
So there you have it – the three essential tasks upon arriving at Mactan-Cebu International Airport! Grab truly makes navigating Southeast Asia a breeze. Alternatively, for complete peace of mind, you can always pre-book an airport pickup service. It definitely takes the stress out of arrival.
Airport exchange offices offer an exchange rate of approximately 54 pesos per dollar, which is less favorable than external exchange offices (around 58 pesos). Therefore, it is recommended to exchange only a small amount for immediate needs such as purchasing a USIM or covering hotel transfer costs.
There are two telecom providers, Smart and Globe, located on the left side of the airport, and their prices are the same. Both providers have their pros and cons, and generally, internet speeds in the Philippines can be slow or unavailable in many areas.
The data usage period for the SIM card is applied as 'a full 7 days' from the activation time. This means it is valid for 168 hours from the moment of activation, not just 7 calendar days.
When using Grab, a Grab Car has a fixed fare of 434 pesos, while a Grab Taxi operates on a meter, typically ranging from 320 to 384 pesos. Unsolicited taxis (haggling taxis) quoted 675 pesos for the same destination.
