Words & Photos by @Rani
These days, I often think back to my visit to
Széchenyi Thermal Bath in Budapest, Hungary, which I visited on a chilly day.
If you're planning a trip to Budapest, Hungary,
I highly recommend adding this place to your itinerary.
My husband and I also visited Széchenyi Thermal Bath
during our winter trip to Budapest.
It was incredibly cold, but
that's exactly what made the experience even more memorable!
Stepping into the steaming outdoor pools amidst the crisp, cold air
felt like entering another world, haha!
Today, I'll be sharing everything about Széchenyi Thermal Bath in Budapest,
including how to get there, opening hours, booking methods,
what to pack, and useful tips for your visit—all in one go!
From Budapest City Center:
How to Get to Széchenyi Thermal Bath
📍 Széchenyi Thermal Bath
Budapest, Állatkerti krt. 9-11, 1146 Hungary
I traveled to Széchenyi Thermal Bath from my accommodation in Budapest city center
using the M1 metro line.
Simply take the M1 line, Budapest's yellow metro,
and get off at Széchenyi fürdő station.
It doesn't take long to get there from the city center,
making it perfect for a half-day excursion.

The weather wasn't exactly sunny, which was a slight bummer,
but it was still incredibly fun!
Once you exit the metro station,
you'll pretty much see the Széchenyi Thermal Bath building right away.
You'll likely spot many Korean travelers heading there early,
so you can just follow them! ^^
Széchenyi Thermal Bath Opening Hours

Széchenyi Thermal Bath's opening hours vary by day,
so it's a good idea to check them before your visit.
How to Book Széchenyi Thermal Bath & Price Comparison
MyRealTrip, Trip.com, WAUG,

While you can purchase admission tickets for Széchenyi Thermal Bath in Budapest
directly on-site,
I highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance
before your visit.

Booking Site | Option | Price | Notes |
MyRealTrip | Weekend Cabin | ~$64
Trip.com | Weekend Morning Fast Track + Cabin | ~$71
WAUG | Weekend Morning Fast Track + Cabin | ~$69 |
I compared prices based on a weekend visit in October, and
MyRealTrip, which doesn't include the Fast Track option,
was the cheapest.
However, if you visit early in the morning, I personally found that
you can enjoy the thermal bath leisurely even without a Fast Track ticket.

Locker vs. Cabin:
Which is Better?

When booking Széchenyi Thermal Bath tickets,
the choice between a locker and a cabin can be a tricky one.
Personally, I recommend getting a cabin.
Why? Because I'm not a big fan of changing clothes in front of other people, haha!

The cabin is your own private space,
making it so much more comfortable for changing,
and perfect for storing your belongings.
Especially if you're traveling
as a couple or family, like me,
a cabin will definitely feel like a luxurious convenience.
Of course, lockers are a bit more budget-friendly,
so if you're traveling light and don't mind communal changing areas,
a locker might be just right for you.
Prioritize value? Go for a locker!
Craving extra comfort? A cabin is your pick!
Honestly, if I were to go back, I'd choose the cabin again in a heartbeat.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath: What to Pack!

When you're heading to the Széchenyi Thermal Bath,
there are a few essentials you might not immediately think of!
✔️ Must-Have Packing List:
Swimsuit
Towel
Flip-flops/Sliders
Toiletries
Waterproof Phone Pouch/Bag
Water or Beverages
Plastic Bag for Wet Swimsuit and Towel
If you're visiting in winter, I *highly* recommend packing flip-flops and a towel.
I went during winter,
and stepping out of the warm water into the cold air was quite a shock! Haha.
Plus, constantly walking barefoot on the cool ground wasn't ideal,
so my flip-flops were absolutely essential.
And since Széchenyi Thermal Bath offers countless picturesque spots,
I highly recommend bringing a waterproof phone pouch or bag.
I brought mine and snapped some truly amazing photos! 😉
One more crucial tip!
After your blissful soak,
it's super handy to have a bag for your wet swimsuit and towel.
Trust me, without one, your travel bag can turn into a soggy mess! 😅
My Honest Review of Széchenyi Thermal Bath

And then, I finally stepped into the magnificent Széchenyi Thermal Bath.
Oh, wow...
Just the thought of indulging in such a grand thermal experience in Europe
felt quite surreal at first.
The building itself is an architectural marvel,
making you want to snap photos even before you dip a toe in!
The outdoor baths, in particular,
exude that unmistakable, iconic Széchenyi atmosphere.

Hehe, I even managed to snag some incredible 'life shots' for the gram!
It was genuinely chilly since it was winter, but the moment you sink into the thermal waters,
oh, the warmth was absolute bliss!
It felt like stepping into another dimension! 😂
To be immersed in that comforting warmth while the cool air swirled around me...
it was a strangely wonderful sensation.
Personally, I found the outdoor baths far more captivating than the indoor ones.
Sure, it was winter, so those brief moments stepping out of the water were bone-chilling,
but absolutely worth it! 😂
I mean, when else would I get to
have such a unique European experience?
So, I dove in and savored every moment!

As the day progressed, it definitely started to get busier.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath boasts a fantastic array of outdoor and indoor
thermal baths and pools.
According to the official guides, you'll find not only the magnificent outdoor pools but also
a diverse selection of indoor pools, each with different temperatures.
My travel companion, Ttyaoh-ssi, and I
happily shuttled between the outdoor and indoor baths,
squeezing in over three hours of pure, unadulterated relaxation.

I initially thought I'd only spend an hour or two there,
but once I was inside, I discovered so much more to experience than I anticipated,
and time simply melted away!
They also have a dedicated swimming pool area with lanes,
but be aware that some of these areas require a swimming cap,
so it's always best to check the specific requirements for the facilities you plan to use.

Once you've fully indulged in the thermal delights,
you'll find hair dryers available,
along with machines to wring out excess water from your swimsuit or clothes,
which are incredibly handy for your departure!
Top Tips for Visiting Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Based on my firsthand experience,
here are my insider tips for making the most of your visit to Széchenyi Thermal Bath!
1. Visit in the morning, if possible!
I made sure to arrive early in the morning,
and the benefit of fewer crowds was absolutely wonderful.
It was easy to snap some amazing photos,
and I could enjoy the outdoor thermal baths in a relatively relaxed way.
On the flip side, when I left after enjoying everything in the afternoon,
I noticed it was definitely much more crowded.
So, if you're hoping for a peaceful experience
or aiming to capture that perfect, unforgettable shot, I highly recommend an morning visit.
Especially in winter, soaking in the thermal baths first thing in the morning
before heading off for lunch makes for a fantastic itinerary.
2. Slippers are a Winter Must-Have!
Because it can be quite uncomfortable walking around barefoot in the thermal baths for extended periods,
it's really best to bring your own slippers.
I'd also recommend bringing your own towel.
3. Cabins: More Useful Than You'd Expect!
If you're weighing your options between a cabin and a locker,
I'd definitely lean towards a cabin.
Especially if you're visiting as a couple or family,
or if, like me, you're not entirely comfortable changing in front of others,
it offers a much more private and comfortable experience.
4. Don't Forget Your Waterproof Pouch!
Széchenyi Thermal Bath is brimming with incredible photo opportunities,
so bringing a waterproof pouch will be super handy.
In winter, the contrast between the warm thermal waters and the crisp, cool air creates
a truly magical and unique atmosphere,
and your photos will turn out absolutely stunning!

On the way back after an incredible time at Széchenyi Thermal Bath,
we stumbled upon a lovely ice-skating rink nearby! :)
After our visit to Széchenyi, we grabbed lunch and then discovered this gem while strolling around.
It was a truly delightful spot, even just for watching the skaters.
If you're planning an unforgettable adventure to Budapest,
I highly recommend adding a visit to Széchenyi Thermal Bath to your itinerary.

I'd absolutely love to go back and enjoy the outdoor thermal baths, especially during the chilly winter months! Haha.
