How to Get Up to Buda Castle and Why I Chose My Method |
I took the bus and got off at the Clark Ádám tér stop,
then walked towards the Funicular station.

But you don't actually need to pay for the Funicular
to get up to Buda Castle.
I used the free elevator: Lift a várba.
Method | Cost and Selection Criteria |
Free Elevator | Free, requires walking to the entrance and a transfer in the middle |
Buda Castle Funicular | Paid, adult one-way 4,500 HUF / round-trip 5,500 HUF |

Instead of searching for Buda Castle on Google Maps,
please search for Lift a várba.

Map Search Term | Lift a várba |
Address | Budapest, Ybl Miklós tér 4, 1013 Hungary |
Starting Point | Clark Ádám tér stop → Funicular Station |
Operating Hours | 09:00 ~ 22:00 |
From the Funicular station as a reference point,
I walked left for about 5 minutes.

Walk past a small park and continue along the roadside restaurants,
and you'll find the elevator entrance building.
On the map, make sure to check the direction for Ybl Miklós tér.

A Photo Guide to Using the Elevator |
Here's the route I personally took.
① Head Inside the Entrance Building
As you step further into the building,
you'll find the first elevator.

② Take the First Elevator Up to the 3rd Floor
I took the first elevator up to the 3rd floor.
When you visit, make sure to check the floor guide
and the signs indicating the direction to Buda Castle.

③ Emerge into a Plaza-like Space
Once you step out, you'll find yourself in a plaza-like area.
Buda Castle was visible further up,
but my journey wasn't quite over yet.

④ Take the Next Elevator Up
I moved to the side of where I exited
and took another elevator.

First Elevator → Middle Area → Second Elevator
—that's the order I followed to reach Buda Castle.

Buda Castle Views and Nearby Sightseeing Route |
Once I arrived at Buda Castle, I explored the exterior
and soaked in the breathtaking views of the Danube River.

Afterward, I walked past Matthias Church all the way to Fisherman's Bastion.

Since my schedule was a bit tight,
I didn't have time to visit the indoor exhibitions at Buda Castle
or the interior of Matthias Church.

If you're planning to explore the interiors,
make sure to set aside dedicated viewing time in addition to your travel time.
For Matthias Church, it's a good idea to check whether your ticket includes
access to the church interior, the tower, or both.

Fisherman's Bastion also has areas you can explore for free.
If you want to access the paid upper panoramic viewing areas,
be sure to check the scope of access included with your ticket or product.

Mini's Planning Tips |
1. Save the Route Order First |
Make sure to save the map pin, photos of the entrance,
and a photo of the second elevator.
It's not just about the entrance;
it's also a good idea to check the transfer points along the way.
2. If You're Short on Time, Define Your Sightseeing Scope |
I personally skipped the indoor exhibitions and focused on connecting the stunning outdoor views
with nearby attractions.
If you'd like to explore the exhibitions, remember to set aside dedicated time for them.
3. Plan Your Descent, Too! |
After all the sightseeing, the steep incline felt quite challenging, so
I opted for a taxi back down.
It's always a good idea to check your transportation options in advance for getting
from your final attraction to your next destination.

Final Thoughts |
The free elevator at Buda Castle comes highly recommended for those looking to
save on transportation costs, even if it means a short walk to the entrance.
Just remember that you'll need to transfer midway,
and your walking adventure continues even after you've reached the top.
On shorter trips, it's not just about saving on transport fees;
think about your energy levels after all that sightseeing, too!
Before you set off, save your map and planned route,
then compare it with the on-site information as you navigate! Happy exploring!
