This was the part I agonized over the most when preparing for my Beppu trip.

After visiting both places myself, I found that while the two accommodations were completely different in style, I loved them both.
However, the recommendation definitely changes depending on who you're traveling with or what your purpose is.
[Kannawaen: The Value of Spending an Extra ~$138]
This place is an iconic Beppu accommodation, usually costing at least ~$276 to ~$345 per night. If it's a filial piety trip with your parents or a special anniversary, it's definitely worth spending the extra money to go here. With a private open-air bath in your room to enjoy 24/7 without worrying about others, and being treated to exquisite traditional kaiseki and teppanyaki, the money spent felt completely worthwhile. You can truly experience the essence of a traditional Japanese ryokan accommodation that we all envision.
[Onyado Nono: The Value of Saving ~$138]
If you don't want to spend a lot on accommodation but would be disappointed to visit Beppu without experiencing a ryokan, this place is perfect.
I went with my niece, but if you're traveling with friends, a partner, or if you're a walk-around traveler, you'll be 200% satisfied with Onyado Nono.
With 7 free private family baths to fully soak in the hot spring atmosphere, unlimited kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) for breakfast, and even late-night ramen, I was amazed, thinking, "This quality for this price!" With the bus stop for Yufuin, the Hells Tour bus, local eateries, and convenience stores all nearby, it's perfect for travelers who prefer to explore on foot.

It's located in the heart of Beppu's Hells Hot Springs, making the Hells Tour accessible within a 3-minute walk.
Its elevated location offers a unique and spectacular view of hot spring steam rising throughout the entire village.
The ryokan offers a complimentary shuttle service (takes about 15 minutes), and if you come by rental car, free parking is also provided.
Onyado Nono Beppu
While the modern exterior might be a slight letdown, the interior is a delightful surprise!
I loved how clean it was with tatami flooring throughout, and the tradition of taking off your shoes before entering.
The public bathhouse features a total of 7 hot spring facilities, including indoor baths, open-air baths, and a self-service Löyly sauna, plus they offer free private family baths (first-come, first-served).
Kannawaen
I stayed in a standard room for four people, and it was incredibly spacious and comfortable.
Of course, there's a communal public bath, and individual rooms also come with private baths.
The annex rooms, with their dedicated hot spring baths (indoor/open-air), are incredibly popular and tend to sell out the fastest, especially for those traveling with parents or children.
The highlight of a ryokan trip is definitely breakfast, isn't it?

Breakfast: Make sure to enjoy breakfast! A lavish buffet awaits, featuring self-service kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) where you can add as much salmon roe, sweet shrimp, and sashimi as you like, alongside Oita's local dishes (like Toriten chicken).
Dinner & Late-Night Snack: If you choose the dinner package, a buffet-style meal is provided. Also, between 10 PM and 11 PM, free shoyu ramen (Yonaki Soba) is served on the first floor – a delightful treat after a relaxing hot spring bath. The Epitome of Refined Hospitality: Exquisite Kaiseki & Teppanyaki
Dinner: You can choose either traditional Kaiseki cuisine featuring seasonal specialties from Oita Prefecture and Bungo beef, or a Teppanyaki (iron grill) course. I personally tried the Teppanyaki, and both the ambiance and the taste were excellent. If you're traveling with your parents, dinner here is an absolute must.
Breakfast: A beautifully presented, neat Japanese set meal (or you can choose Western style) is served. It's so refined, delicious, and aesthetically pleasing that you'll truly feel like, 'THIS is a ryokan morning!'
For Kannawaen, we highly recommend booking the 'Half-Board' option, which includes both breakfast and dinner. It offers outstanding value for money considering its offerings and is a popular option that sells out first.
