Transferring between Bangkok's BKK and DMK airports? Here is a complete guide to using the free airport shuttle bus, plus what to do if you miss your Phuket flight.

Free shuttle bus between Bangkok Suvarnabhumi <─> Don Mueang Airport | Here's where and how to catch it

Bangkok, Thailand actually has two main airports.
Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport.
Today, I'm going to share how to take the free shuttle bus between these two Bangkok airports,
along with some tips on what to do if you ever miss your connecting flight to Phuket.
Let's dive in!
If you're in a rush, just scan the highlighted text!
^__^...
Honestly, I didn't want to find this out the hard way...
But hey, now that I know, I'm more than happy to share the wisdom with you all! ^^^.....

1. Phuket Flights | Direct vs. Bangkok Layover
2. What to do if you miss your connecting flight from Bangkok to Phuket
3. Don Mueang -> Suvarnabhumi Airport Transfer | Free Shuttle Bus
1. Phuket Flights | Direct vs. Bangkok Layover
There are two main ways to get to Phuket, Thailand.
1)
Fly direct to Phuket International Airport

2) Fly to Bangkok, layover, and transfer to a domestic flight to Phuket

However, direct flights to Phuket can be limited,
meaning the schedules are often awkward or the tickets are too expensive.
So, I decided to book a flight with a Bangkok-to-Phuket connection.
Domestic flights from Bangkok to Phuket are usually around ~$64, and there are plenty of daily options.
But... I foolishly thought, "It's just a domestic flight, a one-hour layover should be plenty, right?"...
Yep, that's how I ended up being the person who missed their connection from Bangkok to Phuket.
Thinking I'd be fine just because I only had carry-on bags... Someone needs to teach me a lesson! ;;
Once you land in Bangkok, the immigration queue is insanely long. That alone takes almost an hour.

Also, check-in for domestic flights to Phuket closes at least 1 hour before departure.
While mobile check-in closes hours earlier,
they often demand a printed boarding pass anyway.
✓ Remember to do mobile check-in and print your boarding pass BEFORE departing for Thailand!
✓ For the Bangkok to Phuket transfer, make sure to budget about 3 hours
to safely get through international arrival and over to the domestic terminal.
To make matters worse, it was the day of the EDC Thailand festival,
so flights from Bangkok to Phuket were almost entirely sold out.
2. What to do if you miss your flight from Bangkok to Phuket | Missed Phuket Flight
So, what do you do if you actually miss your flight to Phuket???
If you're at Bangkok's Don Mueang (DMK) Airport, head downstairs and:
1) Ask each airline's ticket booth if they have seats on the next flight to Phuket.
But since there are only three airline booths here...
2) If they tell you there are no available flights...
3) Open up a flight comparison site like Trip.com.
This will allow you to search for other airlines' Phuket flights departing from Don Mueang (DMK),
and also check flights leaving from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK)!
Out of the two, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is much larger and runs far more flights.
So you just need to look for the earliest flight available,
but the catch is that you must check in at least 1 hour before the flight,
and traveling from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi takes more than an hour (around 1.5 to 2 hours).
VV
If you bought a flight to Phuket departing from the same airport,
you just need to factor in check-in time and book a flight departing at least 1.5 hours later.
VV
But if you booked a Phuket flight departing from a different airport, you absolutely need a buffer of at least 2.5 to 3 hours
to make it work!!!
It cost twice as much as my original round-trip ticket ^~~~~^ but somehow, I managed to buy a new ticket to Phuket!
Success!

3. Transferring from Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok | Free Airport Shuttle Bus

The travel time between the two airports is about an hour, but since Bangkok
is notorious for its brutal
traffic,
I was super anxious about calling a taxi to the airport because I had no idea when it would arrive.
I couldn't be sure if it would really take only an hour,
and it was pretty expensive too @!
But surprisingly, in Thailand, where you usually have to pay for everything,
there's actually an amazing free service like this!!!!
It's none other than the free airport shuttle bus provided by the AOT (Airports of Thailand),
which runs directly between Bangkok's two main airports!

This free shuttle bus runs between Bangkok Suvarnabhumi <---> Don Mueang Airport
and takes about an hour.
The buses arrive every 30 minutes,
and at Don Mueang Airport, you can board right in front of [ Exit 3 or Exit 14 ].
It's right in front of Starbucks!
Maybe because not many people know about it,
it wasn't very crowded, and there were plenty of empty seats.
Just head to the counter, confirm it's the shuttle bound for Suvarnabhumi,
and show them your ticket (naturally, it's only for passengers with a same-day flight ticket).
It operates from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
They'll give you a sticker
to wear on your shirt like a nametag.
Then you're all set to board the free shuttle that departs every 30 minutes.
Just sit here and wait, and then...

When it's time, the coordinator will call out to you.
Just follow him,
and you'll board the free shuttle bus from Bangkok Don Mueang to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Since it's a large bus, it seemed to navigate through the traffic pretty smoothly.
Traffic varies depending on the time of day, but when I took it around 5:00 PM, it took just a little over an hour to arrive.
And that is the end of my tearful journey to Phuket! ///
Bonus story)
Since I booked a one-way ticket from Bangkok to Phuket for about ~$128,
maybe because it was so ridiculously expensive,
it turned out to be a priority seat ^^...

And when I was checking in at Suvarnabhumi,
all of a sudden...
Out of nowhere, they handed me an airport lounge ticket too...
Wait, why...?
Then I realized—maybe because I booked via Trip.com,
or because it was a "Priority" seat, the lounge was included!
I made sure to get my money's worth and downed a couple of beers to save time.
I went to the Miracle Lounge in the Bangkok Domestic Terminal.
Chang 🐘 beer is always a win!
The food was so-so, but it was super handy for charging my phone.

When it was time to board, they actually came to find me
and let me board first!
They even asked me to pick out some complimentary food...
just like that!
And I was the first one off the plane too...
While everyone else was queuing up, I was just sitting there
with a sad face,
but suddenly I felt like royalty out of nowhere!
(And no, I've never even flown Prestige class before haha)
They even kept both seats next to me completely empty!
Guys, if you're willing to spend a bit of cash in Thailand, there's always a silver lining!
Don't lose hope!
😱
But still... what if you actually missed your flight to Phuket?
Here are some super convenient hotels near Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport
